The case for and against

Updated Oct 18, 2026

Bull case

Abeona Therapeutics is viewed favorably because ZEVASKYN has already shown strong efficacy, durability, and safety, with clinical data demonstrating reduced cerebrospinal fluid and plasma heparan sulfate alongside cognitive and behavioral gains, while its approved status supports near-term commercial execution in RDEB. The company’s operating momentum is reinforced by 1Q26 top-line revenue of $8.7M, six activated QTC sites, coverage policies for 95% of commercially insured U.S. lives, and a manufacturing footprint that can support up to six slots per month now, with additional capacity planned. Long-term upside also comes from a target U.S. patient pool of about 750, estimated 2026 revenue of $52.1M and 2027 revenue of $97.4M, and a path to cash flow-positive status around 2027 as scaling improves.

Bear case

Abeona Therapeutics is facing a negative fundamental setup because gene therapy carries elevated safety, regulatory, and reimbursement risk, including off-target effects, immune responses, and payor resistance to very expensive treatments. Commercial execution also looks fragile: 2Q revenue of $11.4M came in below the $13.4M and $12.1M expectations, only four of five treated patients were recognized, and management cited low manufacturing yield, biopsy-quality issues, a failed identity test, and two cancellations that hurt production slots. Even with seven active QTCs and an 84-hour stability window, the company is still early in process learning and may need more financing if ZEVASKYN uptake, manufacturing consistency, or launch economics disappoint.
