The case for and against

Updated Oct 18, 2026

Bull case

Applied Industrial Techs is supported by a resilient, broadening demand backdrop, with FY4Q sales up 10.4% to $1,353M and organic growth of 9.7%, while orders rose double digits for a third consecutive quarter and 20 of its top 30 end markets expanded. Its outlook is strengthened by balanced momentum across Service Center and Engineered Solutions, where revenue grew 9.0% and 12.9% respectively, aided by automation, fluid power, technical MRO, and cross-selling gains that also lifted margins and EPS. Management’s FY27 guide calls for 4.0%-6.5% sales growth and $11.65-$12.15 adjusted EPS, and the company’s low leverage plus nearly $2B of dry powder support accretive M&A and further earnings upside.

Bear case

Applied Industrial Techs is exposed to cyclical North American industrial demand, so weaker industrial production, higher tariffs, and elevated fuel or input costs could compress sales and limit its ability to pass through inflation. Its majority-Service Center mix and reliance on the U.S. leave it vulnerable to competitive pricing pressure and any slowdown in maintenance, repair, and operations activity, while elevated interest rates could also restrain capital spending and the higher-margin Engineered Solutions business. Margin risk is already evident: LIFO expense rose to $6.4 million from $2.9 million in F4Q25, helping push gross margin down to 30.4%, down 20 bps y/y, and acquisition or integration missteps could further pressure earnings growth.
