The case for and against

Updated Oct 18, 2026

Bull case

Albemarle is well positioned by its scale, vertical integration, and low-cost asset base, with upstream brine and hard-rock resources feeding a global refining network that helps it capture more of the lithium value chain than less integrated peers. Its outlook is further supported by demand growth that is still outpacing supply, low inventories, and management’s view that market tightness persists even after recent price weakness, which could sustain stronger pricing and earnings power into 2H26/1H27. Financially, the company’s balance sheet is a strength with net leverage at 0.5x and total liquidity of $3.2B, while solid bromine performance and ongoing productivity gains add diversification and optionality for continued cash generation and capital returns.

Bear case

Albemarle is facing a difficult fundamental backdrop because lower lithium prices have already pressured results, with sales falling to about $5.1B in 2025 from $9.6B in 2023, showing how exposed earnings are to commodity volatility. Its outlook is further weakened by the risk of new supply announcements, delayed EV production, reduced government subsidies, and the possibility that non-lithium battery technologies continue to evolve and displace demand. Execution and geopolitical risks also remain elevated across its growth projects and operations, particularly in Chile and in the China/U.S. relationship, while the negative perception of lithium mining and associated carbon emissions could hinder broader EV adoption.
