The case for and against

Updated Oct 14, 2026

Bull case

Atlantic Union Bankshares is well positioned to compound earnings through mid-single-digit loan growth, helped by strong C&I, equipment finance, construction, and multifamily production that supports a durable organic expansion story. The company’s core NIM should also trend higher as roughly $850–900 million of loans reprice each quarter and about $200 million of higher-cost brokered deposits mature in 2Q26, while credit remains strong with 1Q26 net charge-offs at just 2 bps versus a 10bp-15bp guide. Its capital position is solid, with pro forma CET-1 around 10.3% versus a 10.0%-10.5% target, enabling full use of the $250 million buyback authorization and supporting EPS accretion, even as the bank expands into North Carolina and leverages its high client satisfaction and scaled Mid-Atlantic franchise.

Bear case

Atlantic Union Bankshares is vulnerable to a weaker earnings profile because its asset-sensitive balance sheet could face net interest income pressure if rates fall faster than expected, while sharply unexpected rate moves can also create unrealized losses on earning assets. Its outlook is further constrained by elevated regulatory and policy risk, including an unresolved CFPB matter and the possibility that Basel III Endgame or other rules could force higher capital, limiting growth and returns. Credit quality also looks exposed given modestly above-peer CRE and construction concentration, and a prolonged recession in its core markets could lift losses, pressure capital and liquidity, and weigh on overall performance.
