The case for and against

Updated Oct 10, 2026

Bull case

Bank of Hawaii is favored because its franchise combines a loyal, low-cost deposit base in Hawaii with consistently strong credit quality, giving it a durable funding advantage and resilience versus mainland peers. Margin expansion remains the key earnings driver: net interest margin has risen from 2.11% in 1Q24 to 2.74% in 1Q26, supported by repricing and lower deposit costs, while deposits of $21.0 billion and noninterest DDA at 27% reinforce balance-sheet strength. With CET1 at 12.1%, TCE at 6.2%, low-single-digit loan growth, ongoing buybacks, and upside from wealth management and a healthy local economy, the bank appears well positioned for improving profitability and capital returns.

Bear case

Bank of Hawaii is facing a weak fundamental backdrop because loan growth has been sluggish, with balances unchanged last year and up only 0.6% in 2024, raising the risk that earnings estimates and stock performance remain under pressure. Although commercial real estate helped offset declines in auto, home equity, C&I, and construction lending, the broader mix still points to limited organic momentum, and deposits were also uneven, down 2% in 2024 and then up 2.7% in 2025 before falling 1.1% in 1Q26. The outlook is further dampened by exposure to Hawaii’s tourism-driven economy, where prolonged high jet fuel prices and airfares could hurt activity, while slower loan growth, margin compression, and any credit deterioration would add downside risk.
