The case for and against

Updated Sep 30, 2026

Bull case

Byrna Technologies is positioned favorably because it operates in a differentiated less-lethal personal security niche with a broad geographic footprint across the United States, South Africa, Europe, South America, Asia, and Canada, while management is actively broadening its consumer reach beyond firearms-adjacent buyers under new leadership. Although 1FQ sales were only in line with the preannouncement and gross margin of 59.9% was down 90 bps year over year to 61.0% due to a heavier wholesale mix and lower-margin launcher trade-downs, the core thesis remains intact because these pressures appear mix-driven rather than structural. The company’s long-term appeal is supported by expectations for a successful marketing and website pivot that could restore growth and margin expansion by 4FQ26, reinforcing a constructive fundamental outlook despite near-term softness.

Bear case

Byrna Technologies is facing a fundamental deterioration in profitability quality as 1Q Opex rose to $16.5mn, or 56.7% of sales versus 54.3% in 1FQ25, with marketing expense alone at ~$5.3mn and only a 3.4x ROAS, showing that growth is becoming increasingly expensive to sustain. Although net sales increased 11% YoY to $29.0mn, the mix was weak because wholesale growth of 70% YoY was offset by a 9% decline in e-commerce revenue, driven by lower Byrna.com conversion and lower average order value, while gross margin contracted and management cited a transitional/reset period under new leadership. The outlook is further pressured by a higher risk profile from heavy dependence on marketing, regulatory and political uncertainty around non-lethal weapons, supply-chain and product-launch execution risks, and a weakened balance sheet marked by only $7.5M in cash, no debt, and $33.1M of inventory.
