The case for and against

Updated Oct 7, 2026

Bull case

Chubb is favored because its scale, diversification, and disciplined underwriting create an “all-weather” profile that can compound earnings through different market cycles. Its broader-than-peers exposure to Asia, Latin America, and other global markets, reinforced by actions such as the Thailand and Vietnam acquisition, the Cigna Asia-Pacific deal, and a 85.5% stake in Huatai Insurance Group as of March 2024, should support faster long-term growth than more developed markets. Recent results also show resilience, with 2Q26 operating EPS of $7.26, an 82% combined ratio, about $1 billion of quarterly buybacks, and continued expectations for double-digit growth in EPS and tangible book value.

Bear case

Chubb is facing a negative outlook because inflation can erode the value of invested assets and reserves, while adverse loss-reserve development and large catastrophe losses remain persistent earnings risks. Although the overall accident year ex-cat combined ratio improved to 82% versus an 84% estimate and several segments beat expectations, North America Commercial missed and management described property and financial lines as “soft or softening,” with pricing retreating in certain spots. Growth also appears to be slowing, as Global P&C growth decelerated to +4% from +5-6% in recent quarters and large account property premiums declined 55%, reflecting weaker underwriting opportunity and deliberate exposure reduction.
