The case for and against

Updated Oct 18, 2026

Bull case

CNB Financial is attractive because its core net interest margin has an upward bias, supported by redeploying about $84M of securities maturing at a 1.75% weighted-average rate, lower funding costs after the partial subdebt redemption, and higher-yielding loan production. This should help drive NII growth of 26% / 5% / 4% YoY in 2026 / 27 / 28, while the ESSA acquisition in July 2025 and a strong C&I pipeline support mid-single-digit organic balance-sheet growth and expanding fee income. Solid capital ratios of 12.0% CET1 and 14.5% TRBC, along with disciplined underwriting and improving efficiency, give the company flexibility for buybacks or debt redemption while reinforcing a more consistent profitability profile.

Bear case

CNB Financial is facing a tougher fundamental setup as slower-than-expected balance-sheet growth, competitive deposit pricing, and limited further funding-cost relief threaten net interest margin expansion while loan growth may stay restrained by payoff activity and an uneven commercial pipeline. Credit trends are also less reassuring, with 2Q NCOs at 0.09% of loans, NPAs rising to 0.90%, and provision expense increasing to $1.8M, alongside exposure to CRE, residential real estate, and C&I portfolios that could drive higher losses if conditions weaken. Although core PPNR and TBV/share improved to $24.73, the bank’s 8.81% TCE remains below peers at 9.8%, and rising expenses tied to inflation, technology, and scaling toward the $10B threshold could weigh on profitability and capital flexibility.
