The case for and against

Updated Oct 17, 2026

Bull case

Capitol Federal Finl is attractive because it is transitioning from a legacy thrift model into a more diversified commercial bank, broadening both lending mix and geography while improving the revenue mix and profitability. Its earnings power is being lifted by seven consecutive quarters of net interest margin expansion to 2.24% in FY 2Q26, driven by a 30 bps rise in average loan yield to 4.37% and redeployment into commercial loans yielding 5.97%, which supports rising NII and ROTCE. Strong capital, with a 10.3% TCE ratio and 9.5% CBLR at March 31, plus disciplined buybacks and stable credit quality, provide flexibility to fund growth, dividends, and continued shareholder returns.

Bear case

Capitol Federal Finl is viewed negatively because its loan growth remains only low-single-digit even as commercial real estate and construction exposures have risen to 26% from 17% since the end of FY 24, increasing sensitivity to a real estate downturn. At March 31, the loan-to-deposit ratio was still elevated at 117% and the bank carried $1.71 billion of FHLB borrowings at a 3.64% average cost, leaving funding costs vulnerable if Fed hikes persist and pressuring net interest income. Credit quality also looks less stable, with nonperformers jumping to 0.60% of loans from 0.14% in FY 3Q25 and a $4 million specific reserve on $40.2 million of hotel-secured participation loans, while crossing the $10 billion asset threshold could cut interchange revenue by $6.0-6.5 million annually.
