The case for and against

Updated Oct 14, 2026

Bull case

Colgate-Palmolive is attractive because its international business has delivered mid- to high-single-digit organic growth, with Europe adding about 300 bps of toothpaste share since 2016 through a proven two-brand strategy, while Hill’s contributes nearly one-fourth of sales and continues to expand in premium, vet-driven pet nutrition. The outlook is further supported by margin expansion potential and cost discipline, including the expanded Global Growth and Efficiency Program, which targets $500–575MM of annual savings with a three- to four-year cash payback and an after-tax return above 30%. Although North America has been a drag with negative organic sales in most of the past two years, the business can stabilize as innovation and a sharper therapeutic positioning narrow share losses and reaccelerate growth.

Bear case

Colgate-Palmolive is facing a negative outlook because its recent underperformance appears largely self-inflicted, with excessive pricing, reduced promotions, under-investment in North America marketing, and product decisions that ceded share to P&G, Haleon, and Dawn. North America has been down about 2% over the last 8 quarters and lagged HPC peers by roughly 250 bps, while its toothpaste portfolio remains more than a 50% discount to Haleon’s and 28% below P&G’s, limiting premium mix and pricing power. Added pressure from about $300M of incremental 2026 raw material and logistics costs, currency exposure across emerging markets, and slower new-product execution suggests gross margin and organic growth recovery may remain constrained.
