The case for and against

Updated Oct 14, 2026

Bull case

Cannae Holdings is positioned for fundamental upside as it streamlines into a more focused sports-and-entertainment platform, with Black Knight Football, AFC Bournemouth, and related partnerships offering differentiated long-term asset value that is not fully reflected in the current share price. The company’s 2Q26 diluted EPS of $0.86 versus estimates for a loss, along with active portfolio simplification, ongoing monetization of non-core assets, and potential share repurchases, supports a stronger capital-allocation story and accretive NAV per share. Greater disclosure and governance improvements, combined with value creation from controlled assets and reduced complexity, should help narrow the discount to NAV while improving investor confidence in intrinsic value.

Bear case

Cannae Holdings is weighed down by a persistent holding-company discount, governance complexity, and hard-to-value private assets that make NAV realization uncertain and delay any clear market re-rating. Its portfolio transition has required asset sales and reinvestment, but the ongoing restaurants strategic review, a $32 million goodwill impairment, and only a modest $14.6 million incremental BKFC investment highlight execution risk and weak visibility into earnings quality. While roughly $124 million of cash and expected buybacks offer some support, management’s capital allocation remains difficult to assess and portfolio volatility, especially in Alight, BKFC, and other investments, could continue to pressure financial results.
