The case for and against

Updated Oct 16, 2026

Bull case

Citi Trends is viewed positively because its merchandise-led turnaround is driving stronger traffic, with comp sales of 13.9% in 1Q26, sales of $230.9M, and EBITDA guidance of $13.5M to $14.0M, all ahead of consensus. Management’s improved buying, broader “good-better-best” assortment, and targeted off-price sourcing are expanding appeal across women’s, men’s, children’s and footwear categories, while the customer base has remained resilient even after tax refund season. Growth is also supported by accelerating new store openings, potential expansion toward 800 to 850 stores from 591, and leverage that could lift EBITDA from a current LTM $25M toward materially higher levels.

Bear case

Citi Trends is facing a fragile demand backdrop because its results remain highly exposed to discretionary spending by lower-income shoppers, who are vulnerable to lower tax refunds, reduced SNAP benefits, inflation, and higher gas prices. While comps averaged 9.2% in the seven quarters since Ken Seipel took over in mid 2024 and recent comp growth reached 13.9%, roughly 4 to 5 percentage points of that quarter’s strength came from tax refunds, implying underlying momentum is less impressive than it first appears. Even though 25% of customers with household incomes of $75K to $110K drive 40% of spending, any slowdown in consumer spending or a recession would pressure traffic, basket size, and estimates that already assume a back half recovery.
