The case for and against

Updated Oct 16, 2026

Bull case

Crane NXT is favored because its micro-optics technology appears to create a durable moat, with a security thread that has not been credibly counterfeited and a strong reputation among the Federal Reserve and 50+ international central banks. The outlook is further supported by expanding Nashua capacity by about 40% toward enough thread for 55B banknotes per year, alongside historical highs in backlog, win rates, and tender activity, which should lift revenue as demand for higher-value security features rises. Financially, the USG contributed about $180M in Currency revenue in 2025, the Fed’s CY27 Print Order implies 4.80B-5.74B notes and $132.1B-$166.4B of value, and the CAD20 redesign adds a major recurring program win.

Bear case

Crane NXT is exposed to multiple fundamental headwinds that weaken its operating outlook, including further OEM inventory reductions that could extend the recovery in gaming orders and ongoing quarter-to-quarter mix and revenue volatility across CPI and Security and Authentication Technologies. Its margins and earnings are also vulnerable to commodity inflation in steel and electronic components, while COVID-19-related disruptions and a stronger U.S. dollar versus the EUR, GBP, and JPY can pressure revenue and operating profit. In addition, the recent OpSec Security acquisition introduces integration and synergy risk, and timing adjustments tied to the U.S. physical currency redesign cycle and forthcoming note launches add another layer of uncertainty.
