The case for and against

Updated Sep 23, 2026

Bull case

Dine Brands Global is currently executing their Dual Brand conversion strategy, with a goal of reaching 80 locations by the end of the year. While the strategy has potential to increase revenue and create business opportunities, investors should also consider the potential additional capex and G&A requirements for the company, as well as the potential re-franchising of locations. Due to these factors, we are downgrading our outlook on DIN shares to Sector Weight from Overweight and are reducing our estimates for 1Q and the full year.

Bear case

Dine Brands Global is facing pressure in its Applebee's segment due to increased competition in the bar & grill/varied menu category and a more uncertain macroeconomic backdrop, causing same-restaurant sales to decline. While IHOP's sales outperformed industry benchmarks, the overall consumer environment remains challenging and may continue to affect Dine Brands' performance in the second half of 2026. As a result, the company's stock may face downward pressure as investors become more cautious about its future earnings potential.
