The case for and against

Updated Oct 15, 2026

Bull case

Duolingo is benefiting from accelerating DAU trends, with September DAUs up 3.4% M/M and 3Q DAU growth expected to beat consensus at +22.2% Y/Y, supported by the strongest week-over-week growth seen across 3Q. The fundamental case is strengthened by expanding awareness in under-penetrated markets like Asia, successful user reactivation, and ongoing platform improvements that support retention and durability of engagement across cohorts. That user momentum should underpin bookings growth of at least +10.1% Y/Y in 3Q’26, while deliberate monetization efforts and a growing direct ad business create additional upside as management moves toward 2027.

Bear case

Duolingo is facing a worsening competitive backdrop, as its fragmented market has low switching costs, constant new entrants, and intensifying AI-enabled substitutes that can replicate or improve language instruction. With more than 600M members already registered, the company may be nearing saturation in active user growth, while a recession could further pressure premium-tier sign-ups and increase churn. Its expansion into chess adds another risk because Chess.com remains a dominant, highly liquid rival, making retention difficult once users master the basics.
