The case for and against

Updated Oct 9, 2026

Bull case

Enanta Pharma is well positioned by two de-risked value drivers: zelicapavir in RSV and EDP-978 in chronic spontaneous urticaria, both supported by encouraging regulatory and mechanistic data. FDA alignment on a single Phase 2b/3 RSV study in high-risk adults reduces development burden and uncertainty, while management cites ~1.2M annual U.S. adult HR3 patients and 1.5M pediatric at-risk patients, implying a $2B to $2.5B annual opportunity for the currently targeted populations. EDP-978 also has compelling KIT selectivity (>900-fold vs PDGFRα, >800-fold vs PDGFRβ, >30,000-fold vs FLT3), and the upcoming 4Q26 Phase 1 readout could validate target engagement and a clean safety profile, reinforcing the bullish fundamental case.

Bear case

Enanta Pharma is viewed negatively because its valuation depends heavily on a DCF framework that uses a relatively high 13.7% WACC and a 9.5x exit multiple on 2034 estimates, which underscores meaningful uncertainty in long-duration pipeline economics. The outlook is further restrained by assigning only a 50% probability of success to Zelicapavir in RSV and by taking a conservative approach to the rest of the pipeline, limiting confidence in near-term value creation. The thesis is also exposed to multiple risks—clinical development, regulatory, commercial, and intellectual property—and a late 2029 or early 2030 launch assumption suggests cash flow realization remains distant.
