The case for and against

Updated Oct 21, 2026

Bull case

East West Bancorp is supported by a durable Asian American banking moat built on bilingual relationship managers, deep community ties, and cross-border expertise that help sustain above-peer deposit and loan growth. Its fundamentals also look stronger as non-interest-bearing deposits have grown about $500 million per quarter on average over the past year, FY26 loan growth guidance was raised to 6%-8%, and 2Q26 core NII rose 2.0% while fee income beat expectations on wealth management and lending fees. The franchise’s 15.44% CET1 ratio, 0.19% net charge-offs, and continued expansion in wealth management and specialty lending suggest a well-capitalized, resilient bank with multiple organic growth drivers and room to deepen wallet share.

Bear case

East West Bancorp is challenged by a business mix that depends heavily on commercial lending and net interest income, leaving earnings exposed to yield-curve shifts, deposit repricing, and competitive spread compression. Despite a stable outlook for FY26 NII growth of +7% to +9% and low-3.40% NIM, management also flagged modestly rising deposit costs, roughly $13B of CDs rolling in 3Q, and pressure from C&I competition, all of which could erode profitability. In addition, U.S.-China trade tensions, immigration-policy uncertainty, and the risk of weaker credit quality or regional real-estate softness in Los Angeles and San Francisco create a negative risk-reward profile.
