The case for and against

Updated Oct 18, 2026

Bull case

Fortune Brands is supported by premium, market-share-winning brands in water, outdoors, and security that together span both R&R and new construction, with water innovation alone generating around 55% of sales and the portfolio skewing toward higher-quality, higher-margin products. Despite softer demand and inflation, management expects pricing and cost to remain manageable, and the raised $70 million annualized cost-savings plan, with $15 million included in 2026 and the full benefit by 1Q27, should help offset near-term pressure while improving margins. Its 1Q'26 Adj. EPS of $0.53 beat estimates, and valuation remains attractive versus peers, creating upside if product share gains, digital growth, and portfolio optimization continue to drive better execution.

Bear case

Fortune Brands is facing a deteriorating fundamental setup as FY'26 EPS guidance was cut to $3.00-$3.30 and sales are now expected to decline low single digits, with FY'26E revenue revised to $4.37 billion and operating margin compressed to 13.8%. The weakness is broad-based: Water sales were hurt by depressed China demand, Outdoors fell 3.4% on Fiberon and weaker builder-channel conditions, and Security revenue dropped 6%, while tariffs and input inflation rose to about $180 million, pressuring margins further. Management’s $70 million cost-savings plan helps, but with 2Q sales guided down mid-single digits and elevated leverage limiting capital deployment, the outlook remains challenged.
