The case for and against

Updated Jul 25, 2026

Bull case

First Hawaiian is Hawaii's largest bank with a strong track record for excellent credit quality and a focus on deposit growth. Their commercial focus, including a 52% loan book in CRE, and an enviable cost of deposits at 1.20%, should continue to drive growth. With a target of $2-$15 billion in assets for a potential acquisition, First Hawaiian's strong balance sheet and loyal customer base provide an opportunity for potential expansion into the mainland market.

Bear case

First Hawaiian is heavily reliant on the tourism industry and defense spending, both of which are highly susceptible to economic downturns. The company's loan growth has also been challenging in recent years, indicating potential weakness in its loan portfolio. Additionally, lower interest rates could pose a threat to the company's net interest margin.
