The case for and against

Updated Oct 14, 2026

Bull case

Five Below is benefiting from a durable operating turnaround, with 2Q comps up 14.1% and the fifth straight quarter of double-digit comp growth, driven primarily by transaction gains and broad-based strength across demographics, geographies, and categories. The company’s “Rolling Thunder” merchandising and marketing process changes, combined with improved store execution and social/influencer-driven promotion, are supporting stronger traffic, while 2Q adjusted gross margin expanded to 35.6% and adjusted SG&A leverage helped lift the FY26 EBIT margin outlook to about 12.5%. Management also raised FY26 sales guidance to $5.63 billion-$5.71 billion and adjusted EPS to $9.83-$10.31, while new store openings, a growing buyback authorization, and a $1.2 billion cash and investment balance reinforce the case for continued fundamental upside.

Bear case

Five Below is vulnerable to an outsized dependence on holiday performance, with 4Q historically generating about 65% of annual profit and roughly 35% of sales and 45% of EBITDA, making any disruption during that period especially damaging. The thesis is further pressured by rising e-commerce penetration, which can dilute the company’s estimated 50% walk-by traffic, while consumer resistance to $6+ price points could reduce unit velocity and weaken comp sales as shoppers remain highly fickle. In addition, the prior ~20%+ store growth for 12 years is unlikely to remain a durable engine indefinitely, and greater competition, discretionary-spending softness, and execution risks around expansion and management turnover all point to a more fragile fundamental outlook.
