The case for and against

Updated Oct 18, 2026

Bull case

Genesco is supported by improving profitability at Journeys, where 2Q comps rose 2% and 3QTD comps accelerated to the mid-single digits, driven by stronger full-priced sales, athletic lifestyle and low-profile styles, and 4.0 remodels that reportedly lift sales by more than 25%. The company is also showing better operating leverage, with Journeys delivering about 180 basis points of expense leverage despite roughly flat sales, while management continues to expand the remodel footprint, target 95 remodels this year, and close unproductive stores to sharpen execution. Johnston & Murphy adds to the bullish case with 4% 2Q comps, rising brand awareness, and double-digit new-customer revenue growth, while FY27 EPS is expected to improve materially from $1.45 last year to $1.90-$2.30 on gross margin expansion and better earnings momentum.

Bear case

Genesco is facing a softer fundamental backdrop as weakening consumer spending, higher gas prices, and broader macroeconomic pressure are expected to reduce sales growth and weigh on margins, with 1Q27 guided to lower sales and EBIT/EPS versus a year ago. The outlook is further pressured by mall traffic headwinds that could slow Journeys’ turnaround, while schuh appears vulnerable to a weaker UK consumer and less confidence in lower operating losses despite cleaner inventory. Tariff costs, inability to fully pass through product inflation, and store and license exits creating about a $30MM sales drag each add to the risk of earnings disappointment, even as FY27 guidance still implies only slight comp growth on $2.412B-$2.436B of sales.
