The case for and against

Updated Oct 16, 2026

Bull case

General Mills is positioned favorably because its first-quarter results showed both divisions growing 4% and beating estimates, while North America Retail improved 200 bps to -2% and management noted better share trends across most priority categories. International organic growth rose 4% on volume gains of 6%, and North American Foodservice grew 4% with market share gains in 100% of priority businesses, reinforcing the case that recent investments in pricing, innovation, and brand renovation are gaining traction. With about $750M of total cost savings expected, a more stable price/mix backdrop, and management sounding encouraged enough to reiterate guidance, the company appears better positioned to convert operational progress into stronger earnings momentum.

Bear case

General Mills is facing a deteriorating competitive position, with weighted market share down 97 bps in the L12W ending September 5 and fruit snacks down 590 bps as insurgent brands gain ground, while Totino’s and dog food also remain weak. Organic growth is projected to stay negative at -1.5% in 2Q and only recover marginally to +0.1% in 3Q before slipping again, reflecting volume declines, retailer inventory de-loading in Pet, and slower consumer demand amid elevated price sensitivity. Although gross margin reached 33.3% and cost savings helped in 2Q, inflation, fresh dog food cost overruns, and execution risk around turnaround initiatives suggest earnings and margins may remain under pressure.
