The case for and against

Updated Oct 14, 2026

Bull case

General Motors is attractive because its Q2 beat and $500M guidance raise signal durable pricing power and disciplined cost control, while lower warranty costs and better pricing support a stronger 2026 EBIT range of $14-16B. Its core truck and SUV franchise remains a major advantage, with about 40% share in full-size pickups and 2025 U.S. share at 17.4%, up 60 basis points from 2024, reinforcing pricing resilience in the most profitable segments. Beyond autos, high-margin recurring businesses such as OnStar, Super Cruise, GM Defense, energy storage, and GM Financial broaden earnings quality and create a credible path to margin expansion, multiple re-rating, and stronger cash generation.

Bear case

General Motors is viewed negatively because its earnings outlook is pressured by rising commodity inflation and DRAM costs of $1,150M, higher U.S. onshoring costs of $850M, and lower CAFE credit benefits of $225M, only partly offset by $750M each from EV rightsizing and warranty cost benefits. The downside case implies 2026E and 2027E Auto EPS could be about 25% below the base case, while investors may assign only about 4x P/E if they remain skeptical of GM Tech’s future earnings power. That caution is reinforced by the auto industry’s cyclical sensitivity to macro conditions, ongoing supply-chain risk, and the uncertainty and cost burden tied to the EV and AV transition.
