The case for and against

Updated Oct 14, 2026

Bull case

Alphabet is attractive fundamentally because its core Search and YouTube franchises remain highly profitable while AI is expanding, not cannibalizing, monetization across ads, subscriptions, and consumer engagement. Google Cloud adds a second growth engine, with revenue rising 82% to $24.8 billion and operating income more than tripling to $8.8 billion, while a $514 billion backlog and direct TPU sales provide unusual visibility into future demand and margin leverage. The company’s full-stack AI stack, including Gemini, proprietary TPUs, and massive first-party data, supports durable competitive advantages and optionality in Waymo and other Bets, even as heavy capex pressures near-term free cash flow.

Bear case

Alphabet is facing a bearish setup because its core advertising-driven Google services remain highly exposed to competition, a weak economy, and global regulatory risk, while GenAI could undermine Search and YouTube revenue streams. Although 12 months ending June 2026 revenue rose 20.23% to $446.32 billion and NOPAT increased 23.01% to $128.41 billion, average capital jumped 60.77% to $505.72 billion, pushing ROC down to 25.39% from 33.19% and leaving only a 16.02% ROC-WACC spread. Elevated AI capex, with 2026 guidance of $195 billion to $205 billion and another increase expected in 2027, may keep compressing returns if those investments do not translate into durable monetization.
