The case for and against

Updated Oct 16, 2026

Bull case

Goldman Sachs Group is supported by a powerful mix of record-scale trading, advisory, and fee-based businesses, with 3Q26 net revenues of $18.68 billion and EPS of $17.01, or $18.01 on a core basis after excluding the $450 million charitable contribution. Its Global Banking & Markets franchise remains the core earnings engine, while Asset & Wealth Management adds more predictable revenue streams, posting $5.05 billion of net revenues, record management and other fees of $3.59 billion, and $4.10 trillion of assets under supervision. The firm’s 18.7% annualized ROE, 20.5% ROTE, strong capital returns, and continued reduction in lower-quality consumer and historical principal investment exposure underpin confidence in durable profitability and shareholder value creation.

Bear case

Goldman Sachs Group is facing a weaker fundamental backdrop as several core revenue engines deteriorated sequentially, with Equities net revenues down 13% to $6.44 billion, GBM net revenues down 13% to $13.46 billion, and FICC net revenues down 24% to $3.47 billion. The sharp collapse in Investments net revenues to $50 million from $441 million and the 72% drop in Platform Solutions net revenues to $170 million, driven by Apple Card markdowns, highlight earnings volatility and lingering legacy balance-sheet risk. Meanwhile, operating expenses rose 5.8% to $11.31 billion and 30% year over year, so even with TBV per share up 1.4% to $341.43, margin pressure and macro, regulatory, and geopolitical risks leave the outlook negative.
