The case for and against

Updated Oct 18, 2026

Bull case

  • HCI Group is supported by materially improved underwriting economics, as Florida legislative reforms in May 2022 and December reduced litigated and fraudulent claims, helping drive a gross loss ratio below 20% in 2025 versus about 50% in 2022 and a 33% net loss ratio in 2Q26.
  • The company also appears well positioned on capital efficiency, with 2Q26 operating EPS of $5.60 beating estimates, share repurchases of $57 million in the quarter plus $5.5 million in July, and renewed reinsurance pricing that should be neutral to margins at worst despite low single-digit book price declines.
  • Longer term, the outlook is strengthened by diversified growth engines beyond core homeowners underwriting, including the 82% owned Exzeo platform, Tailrow and other reciprocal activity, and the GEICO distribution partnership, all of which add optionality while HCI still benefits from peer-leading profitability and lower hurricane-related volatility.

Bear case

HCI Group is viewed negatively because the company’s recent 2022-2025 gross written premium growth of 80% appears tied to a hard market that is now ending, making future premium expansion harder to sustain. The core Florida homeowners franchise faces structurally low barriers to entry, uncertain market discipline, and a likely soft market, while the bear case still values the business at only 1.2x one-year forward book value and implies $173 per share, roughly 5% below where the shares trade. Although HCI has excess capital above $500mm, premium/surplus below 1.5x estimated 2026 premium, and Exzeo has added about $100mm of managed premium since its IPO in 3Q25, these positives may not offset reinsurance dependence, catastrophe risk, and uncertain long-term diversification.
