The case for and against

Updated Oct 17, 2026

Bull case

IDEX is benefiting from stronger organic growth across all three segments, led by HST’s exposure to data centers, semiconductors, space/defense, and life sciences, where 2Q26 orders rose 28% year over year and HST orders jumped 47%. The company’s 2026 outlook now implies 5%-6% organic sales growth and adjusted EPS of $8.70-$8.85, supported by productivity gains, IEEPA tariff refund benefits, and improving margins, while free cash flow converted at 103% of net income and net leverage stayed low at 1.3x. Its positive view is further reinforced by a high-quality portfolio, visible backlog through the end of 2026, a $1.1B+ liquidity cushion for accretive buybacks and bolt-on M&A, and growing momentum in high-margin water and industrial end markets.

Bear case

IDEX is facing a negative setup because its short-cycle businesses leave limited visibility, making demand choppiness, tariff-driven pressure, and inventory resets harder to absorb. Although 2Q26 adjusted cash EPS guidance of $2.07-$2.12 and organic sales growth of 3%-4% are solid, adjusted EBITDA margins of 26.5%-27.0% imply a 70 bps year-over-year decline at the midpoint due to tariff timing and higher corporate costs. With shares at 22.4x 2027 P/E and near peers, the valuation looks unexciting given risks from municipal funding volatility, FX, and execution on M&A and growth platforms.
