The case for and against

Updated Oct 18, 2026

Bull case

Kontoor Brands is positioned for attractive fundamental upside because its portfolio is becoming more focused on higher-quality, higher-growth engines, with Wrangler generating durable cash flow and Helly Hansen offering a much larger runway in the U.S., Technical Outdoor, and Workwear. The Lee divestiture should sharpen management’s attention while supporting roughly $400 million of accelerated share repurchases and about $350 million of debt paydown, helping offset the earnings drag and enhancing per-share accretion. In addition, gross margin has already expanded meaningfully, with FY26 guidance at 49.8%–50.0% and EBIT margins in the 15%–16% range, while Project Jeanius and brand-led growth should continue to support earnings power and free cash flow.

Bear case

Kontoor Brands is facing a cautious fundamental setup because its largest business, Wrangler, remains heavily dependent on U.S. wholesale, leaving results vulnerable to partner inventory swings and a weak macro backdrop, while Lee has already struggled with 3 consecutive years of negative organic revenue growth FY23-FY25. The 2Q25 acquisition of Helly Hansen adds upside potential, but it also introduces meaningful integration risk in a sector where softlines deals have often disappointed, and the brand’s performance is highly seasonal, with almost 65% of annual revenue in 2H and over 35% in Q4. Near-term fundamentals are further pressured by weather sensitivity, as forecasts for a warm Fall/Winter and warm 1Q27 could dampen ski demand, hurt sell-through, and slow retailer ordering and door expansion.
