The case for and against

Updated Oct 14, 2026

Bull case

LSB Industries is favorably positioned because elevated nitrogen prices, combined with improving operations and fewer turnaround disruptions, should support strong cash generation in 2026/2027 and a cleaner cost base into 2027. The company’s execution at El Dorado is improving, with operating rates reportedly 15-20% above nameplate after turnaround, while the CCS project due in Q1/27 could add approximately $25-30M to operating earnings through 45Q credits. Financially, its strong cash balance of $182M-$218M and modest 1.0x-1.1x net debt/EBITDA provide flexibility to fund growth, including a USDA-supported expansion that could add about $20M EBITDA at attractive capital efficiency.

Bear case

LSB Industries is exposed to a weak downside case where lower fertilizer prices, modeled at a 20% cut, would pressure revenue and profitability even if volumes hold near full capacity. Its earnings remain highly sensitive to volatile nutrient prices and natural gas costs, both of which can swing margins because natural gas is a major feedstock in nitrogen production. The outlook is further burdened by weather-related demand risk, concentrated ownership by Eldridge Industries, and sustainability concerns tied to carbon emissions and fertilizer runoff.
