The case for and against

Updated Oct 14, 2026

Bull case

MongoDB is attractive because its dual-engine model combines high-growth Atlas cloud adoption with a durable self-managed Enterprise Advanced business, while AI-driven database investments expand its addressable workload mix. The company’s metrics support that view: total subscription ARR was $2.89B, up 25% year over year, Atlas revenue grew 29%, and AI-native customers reached 2,200+ and 3% to 5% of Atlas revenue while growing 165% year over year. Management also raised long-term targets, cited 80%+ free cash flow conversion and 100-200bps annual margin expansion, and the 500 million+ Community Server downloads underscore MongoDB’s deep developer adoption and migration optionality.

Bear case

MongoDB is facing a difficult fundamental backdrop because Amazon, Microsoft, and Google can outspend it on engineering and price while bundling database products with broader contracts that MongoDB cannot match, weakening win rates and customer economics. Its valuation also appears stretched relative to the business, and sentiment toward hyper-growth software names may worsen as competition, a softer macro environment, and slower installed-base expansion pressure Atlas upside and raise customer acquisition costs. At the same time, the addressable market may be smaller than expected if businesses do not need document databases or delay NoSQL adoption, while roughly 40% of revenue coming from outside the United States adds foreign-exchange and geopolitical risk.
