The case for and against

Updated Oct 14, 2026

Bull case

The Marzetti is attractive fundamentally because its 12th straight quarter of gross margin expansion shows durable execution on productivity, procurement, manufacturing, and distribution, while 4QF26 adjusted EBITDA of $71.9 million and adjusted EPS of $1.46 both exceeded expectations despite softer sales. Its outlook is further supported by a strong portfolio of branded and licensed products across Retail and Foodservice, with Bachan’s adding a high-growth sauce asset that brings strong velocities, distribution whitespace, and year-one accretion to both revenue and margin. Financial flexibility also looks solid, with $25.1 million of cash, $199.3 million of debt, and ~0.6x TTM adjusted EBITDA net leverage, while FY27 gross margin expansion of about 100 bps signals continued earnings power even with near-term Cyclospora-related disruption.

Bear case

The Marzetti is facing a weak fundamental setup because the Cyclospora outbreak created a ~250 bps sales headwind in 1QF27, with category consumption still negative despite only partial recovery by the week ended August 21st. Its dependence on large customers adds concentration risk, as Chick-fil-A represented 30% of Foodservice sales in FY26 and Walmart 18% of consolidated net sales, leaving results vulnerable to any demand or procurement slowdown. Beyond the outbreak, persistent inflation in open-market ingredients, labor shortages and higher labor costs, plus production disruption risk from single-site sourcing and third-party manufacturing, all threaten margins, supply continuity, and earnings stability.
