The case for and against

Updated Oct 14, 2026

Bull case

Ocular Therapeutix is fundamentally attractive because AXPAXLI offers a differentiated wet AMD profile with potential 9-12Mth durability, setting it apart from anti-VEGF competitors that still rely on more frequent dosing. The positive Pre-NDA meeting and unchanged 505(b)(2) path reduce regulatory risk, while the SOL-1 Week 52 efficacy and safety data, interim SOL-R safety analysis, and confirmatory evidence support a streamlined 4Q26 filing. With the only novel agent in wet AMD backed by a positive prespecified Phase 3 superiority trial versus an approved anti-VEGF, the thesis centers on commercial upside and label differentiation rather than execution risk.

Bear case

Ocular Therapeutix is viewed negatively because its investment case is concentrated in Axpaxli, a Phase 3 asset with no reported pivotal trial data and FDA approval still dependent on the adequacy of the overall NDA package. The company has one revenue-generating product, but the majority of its earning potential remains tied to uncommercialized assets, while it has incurred significant losses since inception and faces escalating development and commercialization expenses. Regulatory hurdles, intense competition from larger anti-VEGF players, reimbursement and physician-acceptance risks, and the need to secure additional funding or partnerships all heighten the odds of dilution, delays, and commercial underperformance.
