The case for and against

Updated Oct 14, 2026

Bull case

ON Semiconductor is attractive because its vertically integrated power, sensing, and control franchise is exposed to durable secular demand in automotive, industrial automation, ADAS, electrification, and AI infrastructure, while management’s 2030 model calls for 12%–14% revenue CAGR, 53% gross margin, 38% operating margin, and 30%–35% free-cash-flow margins. The proposed Synaptics acquisition should broaden its AI TAM by $30 billion to $243 billion by 2030, add complementary edge AI and connected compute products, and deliver $200 million of synergies within 18 months while remaining immediately EPS accretive and keeping net leverage below 2x. Further upside comes from the Embedded Power Platform and SiC initiatives, which can raise power density, lower customer cost, and expand content per rack from about $15,000 to about $115,000 in AI data centers by 2030.

Bear case

ON Semiconductor is exposed to weakening fundamentals from a deteriorating macro environment, gross margin pressure, and semiconductor cyclicality, while further declines in auto SAAR and slower ADAS or EV penetration could reduce demand across its automotive-heavy end markets. Its broad-based exposure and long automotive design cycles increase the risk of being designed out of programs as competition intensifies, especially if SiC adoption and other growth drivers lag. The company’s outlook also depends on realizing significant gross margin expansion through higher revenue, product mix, and manufacturing efficiencies, but any failure to execute—along with risks from natural disasters or pandemic-related disruptions—could keep profitability under pressure over the next several years.
