The case for and against

Updated Oct 14, 2026

Bull case

Precigen is attractive because PAPZIMEOS is the first and only FDA-approved therapy for adult recurrent respiratory papillomatosis, giving it a first-mover advantage in a rare disease where patients otherwise rely on repeated surgical debulking. Its launch is already showing strong traction, with $21.6M in 1Q26 revenue and $53.1M in its second full quarter, while durable efficacy remains compelling as 83% of complete responders were still maintained after at least three years and five responses have lasted more than four years. Beyond PAPZIMEOS, the AdenoVerse platform received FDA Platform Technology Designation on September 21, 2026, and PRGN-2009 plus pembrolizumab is nearing an early 4Q26 update, supporting a broader multi-asset pipeline with meaningful upside optionality.

Bear case

Precigen is weighed down by a pipeline that remains largely clinical-stage, with PRGN-2009 assigned only a 20% probability of success and modeled to reach just $37M in worldwide revenue in 2035 despite an assumed ~$80k therapy cost. Its broader programs also face meaningful execution risk, as management cites enrollment disruptions, possible efficacy or safety shortfalls, and regulatory uncertainty around approval pathways that could delay commercialization. Financially, the company is capital-intensive and dependent on external funding, so any unfavorable financing could be dilutive, while the shrinking juvenile-onset RRP opportunity and IP vulnerability further weaken the fundamental outlook.
