The case for and against

Updated Oct 14, 2026

Bull case

Q2 Holdings is viewed positively because its recurring, subscription-heavy model provides durable visibility, with ARR reaching $945M in 1Q26 and Subscription ARR up 14% Y/Y to $802M, while backlog rose 19% Y/Y to $2.7B. The company has also materially improved profitability, as non-GAAP operating margins expanded from negative territory to about 25% and 1Q26 adjusted EBITDA margin reached 27.7%, supporting EPS growth above 20% through 2028. Management’s embedded position across more than 50% of the top 100 U.S. banks and credit unions, plus strong bookings and selective modernization trends, suggests it can keep growing even as bank technology spending normalizes.

Bear case

Q2 Holdings is facing a weak fundamental setup because slower revenue growth, weaker bookings or retention, and slower adoption of its solutions could pressure a business that still relies heavily on subscription fees and financial-institution spending. Although Subscription revenue rose 14% Y/Y to $180.7M and made up 84% of revenue, Services revenue fell 3% Y/Y to $16.3M and Transactional revenue fell 4% Y/Y to $19.3M, signaling mixed demand and limited diversification. The outlook is also weighed down by banking consolidation, rising competition from core vendors and AI-enabled alternatives, integration and data-security risks, and valuation compression that has already erased the benefit of rising forward EPS expectations.
