The case for and against

Updated Oct 18, 2026

Bull case

Saia is supported by a powerful mix of network expansion, improving density, and strong customer service, with its now-national footprint, more than 210 facilities, and fleet of over 7,500 tractors and 26,000 trailers helping it win share across legacy and newly ramping markets. Recent operating data show the fundamentals strengthening, as 1Q EPS of $1.86 beat expectations, revenue reached $806.2 million, and tonnage trends improved through the quarter, while QTD tonnage per workday rose 8.3% y/y and renewal rates of 6.7% signal durable pricing power. Profitability also appears poised to expand as management expects 2Q operating ratio improvement of 400-450 bps and a longer-term path toward low-80s OR, reflecting meaningful operating leverage from a growing, high-quality LTL franchise.

Bear case

Saia is viewed with a negative outlook because, despite constructive pricing and a 7.1% GRI in July, softer-than-expected QTD volumes suggest its revenue momentum may not fully offset cost pressures. Management’s guidance for roughly 100 bps of sequential OR deterioration in 3Q still points to margin compression, even if that is better than the typical 150-200 bps seasonal increase, and September’s outsized importance adds execution risk. The company’s strong national network and top-tier profitability are offset by competitive price cutting, recession sensitivity, driver shortages, terminal expansion risk, unionization concerns, and equipment availability constraints.
