The case for and against

Updated Oct 18, 2026

Bull case

Sweetgreen is supported by improving same-store sales momentum, with traffic recovering to roughly flat in June and wraps adding about 200 bps of comp uplift and roughly 500 bps of transaction improvement, which helps offset recent industry and food-safety headwinds. The company also has a credible margin recovery path, as restaurant-level margin is expected to improve from about 10.9% in 2026 to 15.3% in 2027, aided by sales leverage, labor efficiencies, and Infinite Kitchen automation across 35 of 287 stores. Longer term, the outlook is reinforced by new unit growth resuming from a lower base, with about 13 net openings expected in 2026 after 35 in 2025, plus a healthier digital mix and loyalty-driven frequency gains that support profitability.

Bear case

Sweetgreen is facing a fundamentally weaker demand profile as consumer sentiment softens, with same-store sales turning negative in 1Q25 and remaining pressured through 1Q26 on traffic declines, pricing roll-offs, and a 600 bps Cyclospora-related comp hit. Its operating model is also exposed to margin pressure from intense competition, promotion-heavy pricing, and commodity and wage inflation, while two-thirds of restaurants showed meaningful room for improvement and restaurant-level margin fell to 13.1% in 2Q26. The company’s risk is amplified by heavy geographic concentration in the Northeast and Los Angeles and a customer base skewed toward ages 25-35, making results especially vulnerable to weather, regional disruptions, and broader economic stress.
