The case for and against

Updated Oct 17, 2026

Bull case

Silgan Hldgs is viewed favorably because its Dispensing and Specialty Closures segment, which represents 42% of FY25 sales and 50% of EBIT, is inflecting positively as Fragrance/Beauty and Healthcare benefit from share gains, new product commercialization, and the fully integrated Weener acquisition delivering €20M of annual cost synergies. Strong execution in Pet Food and improving Custom Containers should support growth, while contractual pass-throughs help offset inflation and sustain EBITDA around $1.015B in FY26 and $1.065B in FY27. The company’s expected ~$450M/$480M of FY26/FY27 free cash flow also underpins deleveraging below 3x net debt by YE26, accretive M&A, and share repurchases, reinforcing a constructive fundamental outlook.

Bear case

Silgan Hldgs is facing a fundamentally weak demand backdrop, with processed food end markets such as soup and fresh pack items seeing volume declines, while softer consumer sentiment and bifurcated spending hurt Personal and Home Care volumes. The company also has elevated customer concentration risk, including a large Metal customer bankruptcy and multiple Custom customer exits in 2025, which can pressure volumes and margin recovery despite rerouting efforts. In addition, plastic packaging organic growth has structurally slowed to -2% to -4% from +1% to +4%, and high leverage, input-cost inflation, and regulatory hurdles to M&A in North America food cans limit its ability to offset these weaknesses.
