The case for and against

Updated Jul 24, 2026

Bull case

SouthState Bank is in a strong position to increase their capital return (share repurchase) through their medium-to-long term target payout ratio of 40%-60%. With a focus on organic growth and conservative scenario weightings, they have the potential to decrease their allowance for loan losses and increase their capital position for potential acquisitions. The company has consistently communicated they are not focused on acquisitions, and with a strong balance sheet, profitable metrics, and a potential increase in EPS, we believe they will be rewarded with a premium valuation over time.

Bear case

SouthState Bank is facing potential constraints with regards to its regulatory capital ratios, with a predicted reduction of ~7% in its risk-weighted assets. Despite this, management has expressed a desire to remain in the 11%-12% range. Additionally, the company's share price below the average repurchase level and higher estimated share repurchases for the year could result in a total payout ratio above its medium-to-long term range, potentially impacting its financials in the long run.
