The case for and against

Updated Oct 18, 2026

Bull case

Steris is benefiting from a durable, high-quality demand profile, with FQ1-27 revenue in line and EPS beating by a dime, while Healthcare organic growth reached 6% on 10% service growth and 9% consumables growth. Its global contract sterilization leadership and recurring service base support resilient execution, as Healthcare services have run at double-digit levels for 14 consecutive quarters and segment EBIT margin expanded 60 bp to 24.8%. Visibility is also improving through 8% Healthcare equipment orders, backlog at a 3-year high of $444M, and management’s confidence in AST growth accelerating as FY'27 progresses, while the $600M North Carolina investment signals long-term capacity and margin expansion.

Bear case

Steris is a high-quality sterilization leader, but the outlook is negative because the latest quarter showed uneven core execution: Healthcare Services and AST both missed growth expectations, while only LifeSci outperformed. Although revenue rose 6.2% cc organic to $1,493M and EPS beat at $2.59, the company’s outlook weakens as capex was raised from $375M to $450M for the new NC facility and free cash flow guidance was cut to $800M from $850M. The stock also faces macro and regulatory risks, including sensitivity to procedure volumes, inflation and supply chain pressure, plus potential adverse tariff and FDA actions, which could constrain margin durability and growth.
