The case for and against

Updated Oct 16, 2026

Bull case

Sunoco is attractive because its Fuel Distribution segment delivered durable scale and pricing power in 1Q26, moving 3.8 billion gallons at $0.17 per gallon margins despite flat U.S. demand and commodity volatility, while organic legacy volumes still rose about 6%. The company also showed earnings momentum with 1Q26 Adjusted EBITDA of $867MM excluding transaction expenses, maintained 2026 guidance of $3.1-3.3BN, and has room for upside from higher refining cracks, the Burnaby refinery, and over $500MM of planned 2026 bolt-on M&A. Its solid balance sheet and liquidity, plus disciplined leverage at 4.0x and ongoing cash generation, support accretive growth and make the outlook constructive through 2027.

Bear case

Sunoco is exposed to compressed fuel distribution margins in a recessionary environment, weaker gasoline-to-crude price spreads, and lower refinery crack spreads, which would directly pressure its core earnings engine. The business also faces structural demand risk from declining motor fuel consumption, driven by fuel-efficiency standards and advancing technology, while unexpected supply disruptions could impair cash flow and distributions. As a fossil-fuel transporter, it remains under climate scrutiny and carbon-accounting pressure, and a downside case implies roughly a 7x EV/EBITDA multiple with about a 9% one-year-out yield, underscoring elevated fundamental and valuation risk.
