The case for and against

Updated Oct 7, 2026

Bull case

Synchrony Financial is viewed positively because its 2Q EPS of $2.59 reflected consistent fundamentals, a lower provision, and stronger-than-expected management execution that lifted the low end of EPS guidance. The company’s differentiated retail-partner model, spanning private-label and co-branded cards, BNPL, installment lending, and healthcare financing, supports attractive customer acquisition and partner retention while driving incremental sales volume and consumer insights. With 15% y/y new account origination, $900m per quarter in repurchases, resilient U.S. consumer credit, and expectations for margin improvement and accelerating loan growth, the setup points to above-average earnings growth and strong ROTCE.

Bear case

Synchrony Financial is viewed negatively because its earnings model is highly exposed to macro deterioration, consumer stress, and partner concentration, any of which could drive steeper delinquencies, higher credit losses, and weaker loan growth. The business also faces pressure from a loss of major retail partners, rising funding costs, and competitive share loss, while recent results showed 1Q26 NIM compressing 30bps q/q to 15.50% as asset yields fell 33bps despite flat benchmark rates. Even with co-brand strength, non-co-brand card spend and lend still shrank 6%-8% y/y, suggesting uneven growth and limited evidence that revenue momentum will fully offset credit and margin risks.
