The case for and against

Updated Oct 16, 2026

Bull case

Trustmark is positioned to benefit from a clearer path to higher profitability, as the sale-leaseback and bond restructure are expected to add about 6% to forward EPS and roughly 10 bps to NIM while supporting a stronger earnings profile into 2027. Its 1Q26 results reinforced that view, with EPS of $0.95 versus $0.86 expected, NIM stable at 3.81%, deposits up 5.5% q/q, and loans up 6.0% LQA, showing solid operating momentum and manageable credit normalization. That combination of balance-sheet growth, buyback activity, and improved profitability, together with a move from a 0.86% ROA in early '24 to +1.2% last quarter, underpins the positive outlook.

Bear case

Trustmark is viewed negatively because its earnings momentum appears constrained by interest rate risk, lower core net interest margin, and slower balance-sheet growth, while M&A execution or overpayment could further pressure profitability. Although fee income rose to $42.4M from $41.2M and expenses were flat at $132.2M, mortgage production still declined 4.6% Q/Q to $375M, limiting the quality of that improvement. Asset quality was stable but not pristine, with NPAs rising to $104M, or 0.75% of loans plus REO, and the company remains exposed to potential deterioration in its energy book and competitive loan pricing pressure.
