The case for and against

Updated Oct 14, 2026

Bull case

Tractor Supply is attractive because its rural-focused store base and broad mix of livestock, companion animal, seasonal, hardware, and apparel categories create a resilient, highly relevant shopping destination for recreational farmers and ranchers. Although 2Q 2026 was pressured by a weak May and continued pet softness, management’s merchandising resets, Freshpet rollout, and new vet-clinic and pharmacy cross-sell opportunities through VIP Petcare and Allivet support improving pet demand and better attachment rates. With shares trading at depressed valuation multiples and management reinvesting tariff-refund savings into price-value, the company appears positioned for a return to positive comp growth and 2027 EPS growth.

Bear case

Tractor Supply is facing slowing demand as quarter-to-date POS growth of 0.9% decelerated from 4.6% last quarter, with May and June weakening and leading indicators pointing to a miss versus 2Q26 consensus. Companion animal, a key profit driver, remains soft and freight, tariffs, and new distribution center startup costs are pressuring gross margin and SG&A, driving 2Q26 EPS down to $0.82 versus $0.85 consensus and full-year EPS to $2.08. Despite the stock already being down nearly 40% year to date and trading at 14.1x forward consensus, the fundamentals still look weak because 2026 comps are cut to 0.7% and new store growth is reduced to 80 from 100 amid heightened competition and execution risk.
