The case for and against

Updated Oct 21, 2026

Bull case

United Community Banks is positioned for stronger 2027 earnings because the Navitas sale and HTM restructure reduce credit and interest-rate risk while improving balance-sheet flexibility, with the company targeting a 75% loan-to-deposit ratio and maintaining over 13% CET1 after the repositioning. The transactions are expected to nearly replace the lost Navitas earnings, with management and analysts pointing to about $0.24 to $0.25 of 2027 EPS benefit from redeploying proceeds into higher-yielding assets and paying down more expensive borrowings, supporting revised 2026E/2027E EPS estimates around $3.05/$3.40. In addition, active buybacks, $50 million repurchased in 3Q26, and a fresh $100 million authorization through 2027 enhance per-share returns, while hiring and small-scale acquisitions such as Peach State support organic growth and a path toward a mid-teens ROTCE.

Bear case

United Community Banks is facing a weak fundamental setup because its outlook is tied to deteriorating core markets, credit quality risk, and macro conditions that could pressure earnings and capital efficiency. The company’s near-term valuation focus has shifted to P/TBV due to earnings uncertainty, while a roughly $300M pre-tax loss expected in 3Q26, net of the $64M Navitas gain, implies a 3Q26 net loss and about an 8.4% decline in TBV to roughly $21.36 per share. Additional downside comes from competitive loan pricing, potential NIM compression in a flat or inverted yield curve, and M&A execution risk that could further weigh on profitability.
