The case for and against

Updated Sep 30, 2026

Bull case

Veritone is attractive because its managed services are rebounding meaningfully, with revenue up 17% year over year after a prior 19% decline, while software revenue held flat at $16.7 million and the company closed over 100 public sector contracts in the quarter, signaling resilience across both commercial and government demand. The longer-term investment case is supported by a large VDR opportunity, with management citing a $99 million direct revenue opportunity over the next 18 months, including $65 million over the next 12 months, and by the possibility that faster adoption of VDR solutions by LLMs could drive material upside through higher estimates and multiple expansion. Even though FY26 revenue guidance was lowered to $100-$115 million from $130-$145 million and execution delays at major hyperscalers and the DOW contract have pressured reported results, the underlying pipeline, improving mix, and strong unit economics suggest the business can recover as timing issues normalize.

Bear case

Veritone is facing a fundamentally weakened outlook because management materially lowered FY26 revenue guidance to $100-$115 million from $130-$145 million, cut non-GAAP net income guidance to a loss of ($22)-($32) million, and cited delayed contract execution in both the DOW-related business and VDR pipeline, signaling that revenue recognition is being pushed further out than expected. The latest quarter compounded these concerns as revenue of $24.3 million missed estimates, gross margin fell to 63.7% from the prior year by 890 basis points, non-GAAP operating margin deteriorated to (42.7%), and operating cash flow worsened to ($10.6) million while the company ended with only $13.6 million in cash against $116.8 million of debt, even after raising $9.4 million through ATM issuance. Investor confidence is further damaged by disclosed accounting errors and previously issued financial statements that should no longer be relied upon, including issues tied to revenue recognition and balance sheet accounts, which raise internal-control and credibility risks in a highly regulated and competitive market where larger technology players can pressure Veritone’s aiWARE platform and delay the path to profitable scale.
