The case for and against

Updated Oct 14, 2026

Bull case

Vital Farms is attractive because it combines a scaled premium brand with an ethically sourced, clean-label value proposition that can expand household penetration as consumer interest deepens. The company still expects $775-$800 million of revenue this year, and management reiterated FY26 guidance while signaling 2Q as a trough, with sequential improvement expected from lower breaker-channel losses, better retail volumes, and a return to roughly 30% gross margin exiting FY26. A major liquidity reset also strengthens the thesis: $185 million of available liquidity from new credit facilities, plus $6-$7 million of annualized SG&A savings, gives it time to stabilize profitability, reduce earnings volatility, and improve operating leverage.

Bear case

Vital Farms is facing a fundamentally pressured setup as 2Q net sales fell 10% to $166 million, driven by a 10.7% volume decline that outweighed modest price/mix gains, while gross margin collapsed to 6.6% and adjusted EBITDA showed a $26.6 million loss. The company’s outlook is further weakened by heavy customer concentration, with about 40% of revenue tied to two customers, plus reliance on a fragile supply chain, volatile commodity and packaging costs, and sole-source carton exposure that can quickly impair profitability and liquidity. At the same time, costly capacity expansion, inventory missteps, and limited ability to secure covenant relief or alternative financing could amplify downside if demand softens or competition intensifies.
