The case for and against

Updated Oct 17, 2026

Bull case

Vulcan Materials is well positioned by its dominant aggregates franchise, producing about 228 million tons in 2025 against 16.6 billion tons of proven and probable reserves, or roughly 83 years of supply, which supports long-duration pricing power and operating visibility. Its ongoing shift away from ready-mix concrete and asphalt toward aggregates improves portfolio quality and should lift returns, while its 23-state footprint plus Mexico adds geographic diversification and local market leverage. Recent results reinforce the case, with 1Q26 aggregates volume up 4.6%, ASP up 4% mix-adjusted, and CY26 EBITDA guidance reiterated despite higher diesel costs and repricing lag, signaling resilient fundamentals.

Bear case

Vulcan Materials is exposed to a cyclical heavy-building-materials market where construction demand, weather, and seasonality can quickly pressure volumes and margins, and the company itself expects a weaker-than-expected quarter from wet weather in Texas. Estimated Q2'26 volume growth was cut to +1% YoY from +3.5%, while cash cost growth per ton was raised to +10% YoY from +8%, underscoring margin risk from fuel and operating leverage even as pricing assumptions stay unchanged. With FY26 volume growth now expected at +1.7% versus guidance of 1-3%, downside also comes from softer private and public construction spending, slow federal infrastructure flow-through, and less favorable economic growth and competition.
