The case for and against

Updated Oct 14, 2026

Bull case

Western Alliance is supported by stable core credit metrics, with net charge-offs improving to 0.34% and classified and special mention balances both declining, even as the NPA uptick to $688M was tied to a previously disclosed life science lab/office CRE migration that management expects to work through. The company also showed resilient fee generation, as core fees of $183M beat consensus and mortgage servicing rebounded by $33M to $31.3M, helping offset margin pressure in GOS and a 2% rise in noninterest expense. A slower balance sheet growth outlook appears constructive because it should aid funding costs, preserve capital for share repurchases, and still allow strong profitability while revenue guidance outside mortgage remains largely unchanged.

Bear case

Western Alliance is facing a weaker fundamental setup because its earnings quality is being pressured by deliberate deposit contraction, higher noninterest expense, and a modestly weaker asset mix. Although 2Q26 NII rose to $807M and loans HFI increased $1.8B to $60.9B, EPS of $2.36 missed the $2.55 estimate as provisions and expenses rose, while period-end deposits fell $849M and NIM slipped to 3.53%. Asset quality also softened, with NPAs up 12% to $688M and the ACL only edging to 0.89%, reinforcing concerns that competitive funding pressure and sluggish loan demand could constrain profitability.
