The case for and against

Updated Oct 18, 2026

Bull case

Wealthfront is supported by strong fundamental momentum in its core advisory business, with September investment advisory assets of $55.188 million rising 23.6% Y/Y and funded clients reaching 1.536 million, up 12.6% Y/Y, which signals durable demand and healthy client acquisition. Cash management also looks to be inflecting positively, as total September assets climbed to $100.466 million and cash management assets rose 0.4% M/M for a third consecutive monthly increase, reinforcing the view that cross-product adoption is keeping assets on platform. With gross margins around 89–90%, adjusted EBITDA margins in the high-40s%, and no corporate debt, the company appears well positioned to compound growth while funding product expansion like Home Lending.

Bear case

Wealthfront is viewed negatively because its core cash management engine is already showing fragility, with cash management revenue falling 1.4% year over year to $63.4 million, fees slipping to 58 bps from 61 bps, and a reversal of recent cash-management improvement threatening the Rule of 40 at 42 after 16 consecutive quarters above the threshold. Competitive pressure in robo advising and the risk of lower rates could further compress fees, slow asset growth, and force higher marketing spend, undermining the platform’s word-of-mouth acquisition model and margin profile. Although investment advisory revenue rose 31.9% to $26.2 million, the 41.5% adjusted EBITDA margin already contracted about 350 bps, and the home lending rollout could weigh on profitability longer than expected.
